T Pertamina (Persero) has successfully recycled 7,066 company uniforms that were collected by 1,834 employees that volunteers as officers of Pertamina's uniform recycling program. The total waste from these uniforms weighed around 2.4 tonnes, which is equivalent to 41.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in reduced emissions.
Pertamina ran its uniform recycling program, or #2Renew1, from May 2 until June 30 this year, encouraging its employees to maximize the use of their uniforms by voluntarily collecting old uniforms for recycling into eco-friendly apparel. The program’s tag line “Give Your Uniform A Second Life” promotes sustainable fashion and aims to cultivate sustainable lifestyles that support a circular economy and contribute to the tangible reduction of Scope 3 emissions.
Vice president of corporate communications Fadjar Djoko Santoso said the uniform recycling program was one of Pertamina’s flagship environmental, social and governance (ESG) programs.
He explained that through sustainable fashion, the state-owned oil and gas holding company aimed to raise employee awareness of the importance of reducing waste, including old and disused uniforms.
Of the total uniforms collected from across the Pertamina Group, 1,397 came from the parent company, while the remaining 5,669 uniforms came from the subholding companies and subsidiaries under the Pertamina Group.
“In processing 2.4 tonnes of clothing waste, the [Pertamina] officers have initiated a concrete movement for reducing carbon emissions. We hope that Pertamina officers can adopt sustainability principles as a way of life, so they can become sustainability agents to educate the community about these sustainability efforts,” Fadjar said.
By processing textile waste into new clothing materials in a circular textile system, Pertamina’s uniform recycling program has helped reduce carbon emissions of up to 41.8 tonnes of Co2e, which is equivalent to fertilizing 14,281 cubic meters of land. Recycling textile waste from its uniforms can potentially save up to 15 million liters of water, and is in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.
“In the future, sustainable fashion is expected to become part of the lifestyle of Pertamina officers. In this way, all [Pertamina] officers can contribute to supporting Indonesia’s net-zero emissions target,” said Fadjar.
Pertamina, as a leading company of the country’s energy transition, is committed to supporting the government’s net-zero by 2060 goal by promoting programs that contribute directly to achieving the SDGs. These efforts align with the implementation of ESG principles across all of Pertamina's business lines and operations.
