T Pertamina (Persero) is collaborating with Siemens Energy to realize safe and affordable access to sustainable energy in Indonesia. This synergy was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Jakarta on Aug. 13 on the discussion of business opportunities and potential collaboration for technological acceleration.

The MoU was signed by Pertamina Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development (SPPU) director Salyadi Saputra and Siemens Energy Asia Pacific senior vice president (SVP) and managing director Thorbjörn Fors.

Salyadi explained that the collaboration was a commitment from both companies to advance Indonesia’s sustainability, innovation and energy.

"Through the MoU between Pertamina and Siemens Energy, we are taking a step forward for proactive and visionary energy leadership. This collaboration is more than just a strategic alliance, [it is also] a combination of expertise, resources and collective efforts to overcome the energy trilemma and ensure that energy is safe, sustainable, and affordable not only for the present, but also for future generations," Salyadi said during the MoU’s signing.

He added that the collaboration was an example of cooperation between energy and technology companies to produce technology and innovation, as well as create added value for stakeholders, local communities, and the environment.

"We will utilize the potential of new renewable resources as a step in energy transition, and at the same time encourage economic growth," Salyadi said.

Similarly, Siemens Energy conveyed that the German company and Pertamina had the same vision of becoming  sustainable leaders in realizing Indonesia’s energy transition.

"Indonesia has the potential to lead the energy transition, and our partnership with Pertamina is the foundation for building a sustainable future for Indonesia. Siemens Energy is not just a provider of technology, we are [also] partners in shaping a new energy landscape based on tradition and progress," Thorbjörn said.

Siemens Energy Indonesia managing director Andilo Harahap stated that the company’s collaboration with Pertamina was a new beginning and a sign of a shared vision.

“We strive to optimize and use higher technology so that we can produce energy efficiently, while still protecting the environment by reducing emissions,” he explained.

There are three main programs from the MoU that will be implemented. First, Power-to-X which is an innovative technology to produce new ways of producing and storing renewable energy. Second is the utilization of upstream wastewater heat energy, resulting in greater energy efficiency and sustainability.

Pertamina Research & Technology Innovation SVP Oki Muraza stated that the heat energy utilization program was a big leap forward. By utilizing advanced heat utilization technology from Siemens Energy, Pertamina could increase the efficiency of its upstream operations while also reducing its carbon footprint.

"This [collaboration could be an example of] circular economies in the energy sector," Oki said.

Third was decarbonization of the marine sector, which would be useful for monitoring and managing carbon emissions in the maritime industry.

"This is also an important program because the maritime industry is a key component of global trade, and the industry faces challenges to reduce emissions," Salyadi noted.

Pertamina corporate communications vice president Fadjar Djoko Santoso added that Pertamina was collaborating with various business partners, government institutions and academics to develop Indonesia’s sustainable energy potential and emission decarbonization efforts. The collaboration is expected to be able to support Pertamina's role in maintaining national energy security while achieving the Indonesian government's net-zero emissions target.

"Initiatives in the fields of energy and sustainability are very important for Indonesia's efforts to meet international environmental standards and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change," he said.
