Bank Indonesia (BI) telah mempertahankan suku bunga acuannya, tetap tidak berubah di tengah nilai tukar rupiah yang lemah. Tetapi, bank sentral menaruh harapan pada aliran masuk di portofolio investasi untuk mengangkat nilai mata uang Indonesia tersebut.

Setelah pertemuan bulanan bank sentral di Jakarta pada Rabu 19 Maret, Gubernur BI Perry Warjiyo mengumumkan dalam konferensi pers bahwa BI Rate tetap di tingkat 5,75 persen. Menurutnya, suku bunga tersebut "konsisten dengan upaya untuk menjaga inflasi" dan "nilai tukar rupiah", serta "untuk mendorong pertumbuhan ekonomi".

"Ketidakpastian global telah meningkat karena kebijakan tarif impor AS yang makin lebar," kata Perry. Ia mengemukakan bahwa ekonomi negara-negara lain, termasuk Jepang dan negara di Eropa, telah terkena imbas "dampak berantai" dari kenaikan tarif AS. Hal itu diperparah oleh permintaan domestik yang stagnan akibat rendahnya kepercayaan bisnis dan melambatnya ekspor. Pada gilirannya, hal itu berdampak pada arus modal yang masuk ke negara-negara berkembang.

Namun, pasar modal global mulai mengalami pergeseran karena investasi obligasi dialihkan ke pasar berkembang. Meskipun, menurut Perry, hanya "sebagian, dan belum kuat". Ia juga mencatat bahwa banyak investasi masuk ke emas.

"Kami masih percaya pada instrumen keuangan Indonesia, baik itu obligasi pemerintah, saham atau [obligasi BI]; secara fundamental masih menarik, karena pertumbuhan ekonominya tetap tinggi," kata Perry. "Rupiah, secara fundamental, seharusnya juga menguat. Seharusnya makin kuat, jadi tekanan yang terjadi terhadap rupiah saat ini adalah karena faktor teknis berdasarkan ketidakpastian global," tambahnya.
