View all search resultsndonesia has stepped up its engagement with the United Nations and reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism, as President Prabowo Subianto prepares for the inaugural Board of Peace meeting in Washington slated for Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Sugiono is in New York for a three-day visit to attend a UN Security Council meeting on Palestine and a series of talks with UN officials and Palestinian representatives to underscore Jakarta’s commitment to upholding international law ahead of the United States-led Board of Peace session.
On his first day in New York on Monday, Sugiono met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, reiterating Indonesia's commitment to UN mechanisms and outlining Jakarta’s intention to participate constructively in upcoming diplomatic efforts on Gaza.
In the meeting, Sugiono assured the UN chief that Indonesia continued to view multilateralism as “the primary pillar in upholding peace and international law”, even as its involvement in the Board of Peace has been widely criticized for potentially undermining UN mechanisms and sidelining Palestinian interests.
Led by US President Donald Trump, the board’s charter has given Washington primacy in managing active conflicts and post-ceasefire stabilization in Gaza, along with coordinating authority that overlaps with several UN bodies, including the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
“Our position is clear: Indonesia’s involvement in the Board of Peace is fully guided by the UN Charter, the vision of the two-state solution, as well as Resolution No. 2803 of the UN Security Council,” Sugiono said, as quoted from a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
He was referring to the council mandate passed last year that laid the UN legal groundwork for the Board of Peace.
