The infected participants have been isolated in their hotel rooms and barred from physically attending the rest of the conference, which ends Saturday.
number of participants at the Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction 2022 (GP2022) in Bali who have tested positive for COVID-19 have been isolated in their hotel rooms and barred from attending the conference in person.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Lt. Gen. Suharyanto told national broadcaster Kompas TV on Thursday that at least 15 people had been infected with COVID-19, including three Indonesians.
National COVID-19 Task Force spokesperson Wiku Adisasmito confirmed the cases at a press conference on Friday at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, the conference venue. He stressed that “only a small number” of asymptomatic cases had been detected and that they “have now been isolated in their hotel [rooms]”.
Wiku emphasized that all other participants that had physically attended the GP2022 were COVID-free.
All GP2022 participants and organizers must take mandatory polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and antigen tests, and only those who returned negative test results may enter the venue. As the PCR and antigen test results are valid for a maximum three days, many participants had to take the tests twice over the duration of the conference, which ran from Monday through Saturday.
Wiku said it was unknown where the COVID-positive participants had caught the virus, saying it “could have happened anywhere”. He also made assurances that the affected participants had not entered the conference venue or had contact with other participants after their positive test results.
“All participants, including delegates and officials, all took PCR tests, and only those people [with] negative PCR [results] can enter the building facilities,” Wiku stressed.
