The Democratic congresspeople – senator Jeff Merkley, senator Chris Van Hollen, representative Lloyd Doggett, representative Pramila Jayapal and representative Ilhan Omar – joined the chairman of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Authority, Bambang Susantono, on a tour of the area that included a visit to the site of the new presidential palace.
"I always say, seeing is believing, and with this visit [the Congress members] can feel the atmosphere and see directly the progress of the development project," Bambang said, as quoted by Antara.
Bambang also said he told the visiting Congress members that all the buildings constructed in Nusantara would be environmentally friendly.
"We don't design skyscrapers here. They will mostly be green buildings that will meet international standards," he said.
Earlier this week, IKN Authority deputy chair Dhony Rahajoe said the five US legislators were looking for opportunities for cooperation.
“We will discuss issues related to the environment. They also want to directly see which aspects they can collaborate with [Indonesia on]," he said.
