he Sibuhuan District Court in Padang Lawas regency, North Sumatra, sentenced two pesantren (Islamic boarding school) teachers to 12 years in prison on Wednesday for the sexual abuse of 24 students.
Syafaruddin Hasibuan, 25, and Saleh Daulay, 27, were charged under Article 6B of the 2022 Sexual Violence Law.
In addition to their prison sentences, they have been ordered to pay Rp 200 million (US$12,769) each in fines, or spend an additional month in prison if they fail to pay.
The Wednesday verdict was lighter than the prosecutor’s initial demand of 15 years of prison and a fine of Rp 300 million or six additional months of prison.
