efense Minister and presumptive president-elect Prabowo Subianto on Friday joined outgoing President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on a working trip to East Java, one of the key battleground provinces in Java where the Gerindra Party had a clean sweep in the Feb. 14 election.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said that Prabowo joined the President in a flight on the presidential aircraft, which left the Halim Perdanakusumah military air base in East Jakarta on Friday morning.

Also joining the President were military secretary Maj. Gen. Rudi Saladin and commander of the Presidential Security Detail (Pasampres) Maj. Gen. Achirudin.

In the lead-up to the Feb. 14 balloting, Jokowi frequently took the defense minister on his trips, especially to Central and East Java, two battleground provinces where the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) had its major stronghold.

In the Feb. 14 presidential election, the PDI-P nominated former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo.

Prabowo has enjoyed a comfortable lead in the manual vote count conducted by the General Election Commission (KPU), garnering a little over 58 percent of the vote. Ganjar is in third position with 16 percent while former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan got 24 percent.

In East Java, Prabowo came in first place by getting more than 66 percent of the vote.

East Java is also the stronghold of Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, Nahdhatul Ulama (NU), which has unofficially thrown its weight behind Prabowo.
