A

s human-tiger conflict in Sumatra escalates into clashes between villagers and authorities, environmentalists are urging the government to take human-wildlife conflict prevention and resolution more seriously.

Hundreds of residents of Bandar Negeri Suoh district in West Lampung regency, Lampung, mobbed and burned down an office of the South Bukit Barisan National Park (TNBBS) management on Monday.

The residents were incensed by an increase in Sumatran tiger attacks in the district.

The latest attack occurred on Monday, when a tiger attacked Samanan, a 41-year-old resident of Sukamarga village in Bandar Negeri Suoh, while he was working on his farm. He suffered head wounds and was rushed to a nearby community health center (puskesmas) for treatment.

The tiger attack against Samanan was the third in the regency in two months. Last month, two farmers were mauled to death by a tiger on their farm.

According to local authorities, the attack took place on farmland that was encroaching upon protected national park forest. They claimed that deforestation in the area put the lives of the wild animals in danger and prompted their attacks.
