The People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) has granted the wish of the family of the late founding father Sukarno, by confirming that an old decree stripping him of authority in the aftermath of an alleged coup attempt is now void.

MPR Speaker Bambang Soesatyo denounced the decree on Monday, stating that the assembly sought to resolve any lingering “psychological and political” damage to those linked to the former president.

Bambang stated that the accusations were never legally proven and conflicted with Indonesia’s legal principles.

He emphasized that this move restores Sukarno’s legacy and should be widely communicated to the public.
