ntigraft activists have criticized the selection committee for the new leaders of the corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for advancing many candidates with alleged legal and ethics violations and few with solid track records of competence and integrity.

On Wednesday, committee chair Muhammad Yusuf Ateh announced the 20 candidates that will advance to the next stage of the process, out of the 40 who underwent the profiling assessment in late August. The committee also announced 20 names still in the running to sit on the antigraft body’s supervisory council.

“The next stage, interview and health checkups will be held on Sept. 17 and 18 for applicants to the KPK commissioner position and on Sept. 19 and 20 for the supervisory council candidates,” Yusuf said, as quoted by Kompas.

Among the 20 remaining candidates for commissioner are Johanis Tanak, incumbent KPK commissioner; Ida Budhiati , former Election Organization Ethics Council member; Poengky Indarti, National Police Commission (Kompolnas) member; Pahala Nainggolan, incumbent KPK deputy for graft prevention; Johan Budi Sapto Pribowo, a former KPK spokesperson and former member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P); and Yanuar Nugroho, an academic and former deputy chief of staff for the president.

The list also included nine candidates with backgrounds in law enforcement, such as current Central Kalimantan Police chief Insp. Gen. Joko Purwanto and three-star police general Comr. Gen. Setyo Budiyanto, who is serving as the Agriculture Ministry’s inspector general.
