T

he police have set up a joint team to hunt for the perpetrator of a shooting in Bone, South Sulawesi, in which lawyer Rudi S. Gani was killed.

"A joint team has been deployed and will work optimally until the perpetrator is caught," Bone Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Erwin Syah said in Makassar on Sunday, as quoted by the Antara news agency.

The joint team consists of detectives and officers from the South Sulawesi Police, the Bone Police and the Lappariaja Police.

The victim was shot dead on New Year’s Eve at his wife’s residence in Bone. A bullet from an 8-millimeter caliber air rifle penetrated his right cheek, leading to his death. Despite being rushed to the Lappariaja Puskesmas (community health center), he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward.

Police have since interviewed witnesses, collected evidence and conducted a forensic examination on the projectile. However, the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Meanwhile, the fact-finding team formed by the Makassar branch of the Association of Indonesian Advocates (Peradi) revealed that Rudi was handling five land dispute cases in Bone regency at the time of his death.

Makassar Peradi head Tajuddin Rachman gathered this information from the victim’s wife and shared his findings with the police. Rudi’s wife, Maryam, suspects several individuals were involved in husband's murder.

"There are three people I suspect. The suspicion is reasonable, as it is related to the case handled by my husband. So, I suspect them," she said in Makassar on Sunday, as quoted by cnnindonesia.com.

Maryam added that Rudi had received threats on social media in the weeks leading up to the shooting, particularly after mediating a land dispute around four weeks prior.

However, Rudi did not view these messages as serious threats.

Before the shooting, Maryam also noticed suspicious behavior from individuals who repeatedly passed by their house, peering inside from the afternoon until evening.

Rudi dismissed her concerns, insisting they were not important.
