At least 342 students and two teachers complained of having symptoms of food poisoning after eating a food package distributed under the free nutritious meal program on April 29.
undreds of students and teachers in a state junior high school in Bandung, West Java, have fallen sick and showed symptoms of food poisoning after eating meal packages provided under the free nutritious meal program, adding to the long list of incidents surrounding President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship program.
At least 342 students and two teachers from SMP 35 Bandung state junior high school complained of experiencing symptoms of poisoning, including nausea, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea and stomachache, allegedly after eating spoiled macaroni and vegetables from the free meal package on Tuesday.
The school received first reports from some parents on Wednesday, a day after the meal packages were distributed and eaten.
“On Wednesday morning, we received reports that several students showed symptoms of diarrhea. But after further confirmation, it turned out that the number of affected students was quite high,” SMP 35 spokesperson Ganjar Sulandiana said on Thursday, as quoted by kompas.com.
A day earlier, a teacher from the school also reported suffering from stomachache and diarrhea after trying a food package distributed under the program.
The school later coordinated with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), the government agency that runs the program, to report the suspected food poisoning incident. The city’s Health Agency has taken samples of the food to be tested at the West Java regional health laboratory (labkesda) as well as checking the kitchen providing Tuesday’s meal packages.
Three nearby community health centers provided treatment for affected students. No students were hospitalized due to the incident.

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan regretted the incident, saying that it served as a reminder of the need for stricter oversight in the free meals program.
“I immediately coordinated with all relevant parties and checked on the students. I’m relieved that affected students have all recovered,” he said on Thursday, as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that students at SMA 19 Bandung state senior high school, who received the same menu as their counterparts in SMP 35, did not report any food poisoning cases, as they did not consume the meal after smelling a foul odor from the food.
“Although the city administration doesn’t have authority to take legal action [regarding the incident], we will enforce stricter supervision because the consumers are residents of Bandung,” Farhan said. “It’s our responsibility to protect the students.”
The incident in Bandung was the latest in the province, after at least 165 students in Cianjur regency were sent to the hospital for food poisoning after eating the free meals. The high number of students forced the local administration to declare a state of emergency in the region.
Another case also broke out in Wonorejo, Central Java, where a school principal reportedly vomited after sampling one of the meals, leading the school to halt distribution to students.
BGN head Dadan Hindayana has pledged to strengthen food safety measures in over 1,000 kitchens across the country.
