A

mass protest against a property tax hike on Tuesday turned violent in Bone regency, South Sulawesi, leaving four Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) personnel and two police officers injured in the line of duty for crowd control.

Around a thousand people had gathered around midday in front of the offices of Bone Regent Asman Sulaiman, waiting for him to meet them and fulfill their demand to cancel a recently implemented increase in the property tax.

Local residents were responding to a widespread rumor that the regency administration had increased the property tax 300 percent, though the administration said the tax had been increased only 65 percent.

The protesters became angry when Asman, a younger brother of Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman, did not show up until late afternoon.

They then started throwing stones and pressing against a barricade that had been installed and guarded by police, military Satpol PP personnel. The crowd eventually broke through the entrance gate before regency officials agreed to meet them.

But the meeting did not allay the unrest, which continued until the police deployed tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Later on Tuesday, acting regency secretary Andi Saharudin told reporters: “The 65 percent [property tax] adjustment is suspended. As instructed by the central government, we have suspended and will review the tax increase,” he said, as quoted by Detik.com.

He also said the regency would revert to the previous tax rate and compensate all residents who had paid their taxes using the new rate.
