Over 2,000 Aussies show up in Sydney to play Pokémon Go Pokemon Go is displayed on a cell phone in Los Angeles on Friday, July 8, 2016. Just days after being made available in the U.S., the mobile game Pokemon Go has jumped to become the top-grossing app in the App Store. And players have reported wiping out in a variety of ways as they wander the real world, eyes glued to their smartphone screens, in search of digital monsters. (AP/Richard Vogel)

ver 2,000 hooked Australian gamers of the newly released smartphone game Pokémon Go appeared in front of the majestic Sydney Opera House and Harbor on Sunday for a “meet-and-greet” and a massive catch of pokémons in the city.

Guy Blomberg, a content manager at PAX Australia and Oz Comic-Con, created an event called "Pokémon Go Walk in Sydney #1" to congregate fellow lovers of the smartphone game. Around 13,000 users were interested in attending the event as of that day.

In an interview with Mashable Australia, Blomberg confessed that he only expected 1,000 people to attend his event. “I did not think it would be that big, so I was very surprised. It’s definitely a thing. It’s getting people out of the house,” he told the news site.

When someone suddenly sees a creature up for grabs, someone would yell out to stay alerted and catch the pokémon. Then, gamers would share snapshots of their experience using the hashtag #PokeGoWalk.

A Pikachu, Krabby and an Electabuzz were spotted during the walk and attendees were hastily and frantically rushing toward them.

In a Facebook post on the event’s page, Blomberg invited other gamers to join future Pokémon Go events.

“Fantastic turnout, perfect weather, and so many lures! Thanks, everyone! We’re continuing to walk around the suggested path around the harbor towards King Street Wharf, feel free to continue along with us,” he wrote.
