atot Indrajati has been awarded with the UOB Indonesia Painting of the Year title on Monday for his work, Right or Wrong My Home.
Chosen from among four finalists, Gatot's painting impressed the judges because of how its concept of “unity in diversity” was illustrated through his urban landscape showing the Indonesian public. “I'm inspired by the spirit of Indonesian people for their country and how their attitudes are tied to the identity of the country,” said Gatot in the press release on Monday.
The 36-year-old painter became the first artist to twice win this competition. He had previously been recognized with a similar award in 2011 for his painting, Repacking. In addition to a cash prize of Rp 250 million (US$19,246), Gatot's painting will compete regionally against works from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand to strive for the title of UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year.
Meanwhile, artist Ignasius Dicky Takndare took home the title of Most Promising Artist of the Year for his work, Khanikla mey Moyo Yarate Ate (they have taken what belongs to us), which he said conveys the loss of identity from globalization by illustrating a Papuan child who wears a plastic bag to cover his body, instead of the traditional noken (woven bag).

Independent curator and ITB lecturer Agung Hujatnikajennong, art curator Kuss Indarto and renowned contemporary artist Heri Dono formed the panel of judges.
The works of all winners are to be publicly exhibited in Ciputra Artpreneur in Kuningan, South Jakarta, until Nov. 7 and will be put on display afterwards at the UOB Plaza in Central Jakarta on Nov. 8 to 22.
Held by private lender UOB Indonesia, the competition aims to broaden the company’s awareness and support of the progress of local art.
“Through this competition, we hope that we will always push forward the spirit of Indonesian artists and showcase their talents and creativity to the world," said UOB Indonesia president director Kevin Lam. (mra/kes)
