B

ollywood blockbuster, Dangal (a Hindi word meaning “wrestling competition”), has been named the highest grossing Indian movie of all time.

Featuring Indian megastar Aamir Khan, the wrestling drama has netted 3.45 billion rupees (US$50.59 million) at the domestic box office in the three weeks since its release, reported AFP.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the based-on-a-true-story movie tracks the journey of a former Indian wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, played by Khan, who trains his daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat, and turns them into champion wrestlers for the country. The film has been acknowledged as a sports drama but also serves as a feminist statement.

Aamir Khan has proven that he is his only competition in Indian cinema by smashing his very own prior top-grosser movie, PK, which racked up a total of 3.40 billion rupees.

Khan reportedly had to gain 22 kilograms to play the role of Mahavir before losing all of the weight to act out the younger version of his character for some parts of the movie.

Dangal has managed to beat Sultan, another wrestling drama released in July last year that accumulated 3.15 billion rupees and placed itself third in the all-time grossing list. (nik/kes)
