- Oil free cosmetics are the best kind of eye makeup for you. Being oil free reduces the chances of the product coming into contact with your eyes.
- Use waterproof eye makeup, particularly mascara and eyeliner. Water resistant products are less likely to smudge on the eyes, further protecting your eyes from irritation against the contact lenses that you’re wearing. Avoid applying products like eyeliner on the edges or inner surface of the eyelids.
- Even though makeup can last quite some time, avoid using a particular product for more than three months. Bacteria builds up in your product, so for those that are applied close to the eyes like mascara or eyeliner, replacing your product every three months will better maintain hygiene and prevent eye infections.
- Put on your contact lenses before applying eye makeup, and take out your contacts before removing the eye makeup. Remember to always wash your hands before touching your contacts.

- When applying eye shadow, close your eyes and be sure to avoid spreading it on the edges of the eyes. Gently dab with a piece of tissue or cotton to remove excess powder of the eyeshadow before opening your eyes to prevent irritation.
- Better yet, opt for cream eye shadows as an alternative to powder eye shadows. This would further reduce chances of irritation and bring further comfort to those of you wearing contact lenses.
- Use a sponge to apply powder around the eyes. Apply gently to better prevent the powder from entering your eyes.
While these makeup tips will help those of you who would rather not compromise either style or health whilst wearing contact lenses, they could also be useful as a general guideline to avoid eye infections and irritations for anyone wearing eye makeup.
If at any point your eyes become red or begins to swell, remove your makeup and contact your doctor. (tha/kes)
