hose disappointed with Annabelle or left unimpressed by The Conjuring 2 may want to give The Conjuring cinematic universe one more shot with Annabelle: Creation

The second movie in the Annabelle franchise and the prequel to its predecessor Annabelle: Creation is everything viewers wanted from Annabelle and more.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, known for his 2016 directorial debut and box office success Lights Out, this fourth installment to The Conjuring series tells the origin story of the possessed Annabelle doll.

Samuel Mullins (Anthony LaPaglia), a dollmaker, and his wife Esther (Miranda Otto), whose daughter died in a tragic accident 12 years earlier, open their home to a group of girls and a nun, Sister Charlotte (Stephanie Sigman), when the girls are left homeless after the closing down of their orphanage. The big house seems like a dream come true to the girls until they discover the dollmaker’s possessed creation from over a decade ago, Annabelle. When the doll and its spirit begins to set its sights on the girls, their little safe haven turns into a storm of terror.

Annabelle: Creation is impressive in more ways than one. For starters, it doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares to call itself a horror movie. It uses more psychological fright tactics, building up tension in ways that make you beg for a loud scare, but never quite giving it to you until just the right moment.

The movie has a cast of talented actors, who further shine with the help of meticulously designed sets and props. In fact, the Annabelle doll, along with other props in the house, is so unsettling that, at the request of some of the actors, producers called in a Catholic priest to bless the set before filming took place. You know, just in case. (kes)
