Europe’s biggest gaming convention Gamescom is back and brings a host of new announcements and trailers for all to see.

While it is usually not as big of a spectacle as E3, it still provides a platform for many games companies to update their fans on what they are working on.

Microsoft

Microsoft had an hour and a half livestream keynote in which it revealed a lot of new projects. However, their main announcement centered on the revealing of the Xbox One X Scorpio edition, which is now live for pre-order.

The new console is said to have 40 percent more processing power than any console on the market and is built to play games in high-definition 4k resolution. Microsoft also announced there would be 100 confirmed Xbox One X enhanced titles that would be available to play in 4k. This is a list of all the games getting enhanced versions for the Xbox One X.

On the games side, Microsoft has released new trailers for Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, the second installment of the popular Middle Earth series, and Assassin’s Creed: Origins. It also announced that it would be releasing a remastered version of the 12-year-old RTS game Age of Empires 2, and released a teaser trailer of the new Age of Empire 4, which at the moment does not have a confirmed release date.

In addition to its list of new games, Microsoft also announced an expansion to its exclusive title ReCore. The new expansion will include HDR support for the new Xbox One X and will be free to those who bought the original game.

Nintendo

Nintendo did not take much time with its livestream and chose to limit it mostly to gameplay. However, it did make many announcements through Twitter. The first was that Nintendo would be announcing an SNES themed 3DS XL for the UK and Europe, to be released Oct. 13. So far there is no word on the pricing or international release.

Nintendo also revealed three additional new classic games to its Nintendo select range. These include Super Mario 3D Land, Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Kirby Triple Deluxe.

Another announcement is the release date for Fire Emblem Warriors for Europe, set for release on Oct. 20. The Switch version will have a limited edition box set that includes character cards and a soundtrack. You can watch the trailer here.

Other releases to be excited about are the pre-order for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the newest additions to the Pokemon franchise. Pre-orders are available at UK stores and each 39.99 pound (US$51.52) purchase includes a figurine of the starter Pokemon.

In other Pokemon news, Pokemon Gold and Silver are getting re-releases to the Nintendo virtual console.

For those who would like the old-style physical edition boxes, Nintendo has released special boxed editions that can be bought from their store for 8.99 pounds. The main advantage of having these old games on your virtual device is that they will be Pokemon Bank compatible, which means that the Pokemon can be transferred from Gold and Silver to the new Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Games.

Last but not least, Nintendo also released a new trailer for the new Metroid game, Samus Returns. It also showed a lot more footage of its new Mario Odyssey game, which includes a new world called the Luncheon Kingdom.

Sony

This year Sony decided not to take the stage at Gamescom, but it did not shy away from announcements. Most prominent of them being the announcement of a new Shenmue game with a PS4 teaser trailer.

Other notable releases include a new trailer for Destiny 2 and Sony working to expand its Racing game exposure with a new version of the PS4 slim with a GT sport theme. This limited edition PS4 will come in silver with the GT sport logo in the center and a 1TB hard drive. The limited edition console comes with a day 1 edition of the game that provides access to $250,000 in-game credits, livery sticker packs, a chrome racing helmet and 60 PS4 avatars.

Everyone else (Bethesda, Ubisoft, EA, Square Enix, etc.)

EA released a new trailer for Star Wars: Battlefront 2’s Starfighter assault, which shows footage of the space battles that will be available for the new game. The trailer includes many of the characters in the movies taking control of Star Wars fighters. FIFA 18 also got a brand new trailer that announced pre-order availability for the game. EA also announced that Sims 4 would come out in November with a cats and dogs expansion.

Bethesda used its press conference to talk about games that it released at E3, including a new standalone Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, which has a planned September release date.  Footage of the sequel to popular horror game The Evil Within promises a terrifying experience with zombies, white goo and what seems to be a teleporting assassin trying to kill you. It also gave a release date for Fallout 4 VR, which will be released on Dec. 12 exclusively on HTC Vive.

Ubisoft has entered the fray with new two new trailers for Assassin’s Creed Origins, one that contains gameplay demo and another cinematic one. The gameplay demo explores new features such as RPG elements, the characters, and a good look at the open world. Anno 1800, a new city building/strategy game, also got a new trailer and announcement that it is coming in winter 2018. Players must build a city in the dawn of the industrial age through diplomacy, trade or warfare.

Finally, other announcements include: Final Fantasy 15 coming to PC, PlayerUnknown's Battleground getting Nvidia Shadowplay support, which will make it easier to record and make highlights for this popular streaming game. Life is Strange: Before the Storm also got a new trailer. (dev/kes)
