Bali discussion reviews Europalia Indonesia 2017

Following the Europalia Arts Festival Indonesia that was held from October 2017 to January 2018, the Culture and Education Ministry held a discussion on the festival's achievements along with the Bentara Budaya Bali.

he Culture and Education Ministry hosted a discussion on the Europalia Arts Festival Indonesia on Sunday in Denpasar, Bali, in collaboration with the Bentara Budaya Bali, a non-profit cultural institution established by the Kompas-Gramedia Group.

Representatives from the public, artists and humanists discussed the art and culture forms the festival presented from Oct. 10, 2017 to Jan. 21, 2018.

Idayati, a Bentara Budaya Bali program staffer, told Antara that the festival was examined in its entirety.

The festival’s curators, including Nyak Ubiet Ina Raseuki, Wicaksono Adi and Hikmat Darmawan, were speakers at the event, alongside Ahmad Mahendra from the culture ministry, Bentara Budaya Bali's Sang Nyoman Arsa Wijaya, and Europalia Indonesia’s Ratna Pandjaitan.

The discussion focused on how the four pillars of the festival – heritage, contemporary, creation and exchange – were interpreted to resonate through Indonesia’s cultural achievements.

Idayati said the festival was also expected to trigger the country’s artists and artistic communities to generate masterpieces.

Indonesia was selected as a guest country for the 26th Europalia Arts Festival, becoming the fourth Asian guest country after Japan (1989), China (2009) and India (2013).

The four-month festival saw 486 artists and humanists perform in seven European countries, with the main event taking place at the Centre For Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium.

The Europalia Arts Festival Indonesia presented 247 works of art in 20 exhibitions, 71 dance and theatrical performances, 95 musical performances, 34 literary works, 14 film screenings and nine conferences. (wng)
