Modern French-American restaurant Vong Kitchen is finally ready to launch its Sunday brunch menu in Jakarta.

The restaurant is located in Alila Hotel SCBD, which means you’ll need to take quite a detour to get to it during Car Free Day. But the offerings are worth it.

Brunch at Vong Kitchen runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and that Sunday, when The Jakarta Post arrived at noon, DJ David J was already in action with a view of SCBD skyscrapers in the background.

Brunch starts with house-made bread rolls that are moist, soft and addicting, with butter at the side. But it is best to stop after just one roll, especially because the menu includes options that come with delectable bread.

The Post opted for a lobster roll, which is actually part of the lunch menu. It was served with soft, buttery bread made of potato flour. On top of the bread is chopped lobster meat, succulent and tasty, paired with fresh lettuce and tarragon mayonnaise. Cassava chips on the side add texture to this dish.

But it is the bread that makes the dish memorable.

Chef de cuisine Luisa Caicedo told The Post that the restaurant uses potato bread according to the New York-style it adheres to.

“Because there is sweetness to it and it is softer,” she said of the bread.

Luisa went on to say that when the restaurant made potato bread, it also used regular flour because the gluten is needed.

Another popular option is the currently trending avocado toast, served with boiled eggs and salad on the side. Eggs Benedict with choices of ham, salmon or just spinach is also interesting, as well as the smoked salmon tower or crispy French toast. But for those who crave Asian flavors, duck fried rice from the lunch menu is worth a try.

For dessert, Luisa recommends the mango pannacotta with coconut sorbet.

It was suddenly 3 p.m. and we realized how we had lost track of time thanks to the company, cup of coffee and music playing in the background.

“More than just food and ambiance, we offer a DJ that plays music – but it can’t be too upbeat. And people need a ‘visual’ [a DJ to look at]. We could use a playlist, but if guests can see a DJ playing, it adds excitement and it helps a lot,” said Wibi Hananto, marketing communication manager of Le Burger and Vong Kitchen.
