Gillian Anderson will play the role of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in Season 4 of The Crown.
illian Anderson has taken on the role of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in season four of Netflix’s popular drama series, The Crown.
The actress, who is best known as FBI agent Dana Scully from The X-Files, will be swapping her FBI badge for a handbag to portray the iconic British political figure. According to Variety, Netflix is yet to release a word on the premiere date of the fourth season, nor comment on the first report released by the Sunday Times.
For the Netflix blockbuster, Anderson is one of the notable additions to The Crown’s cast, following John Lithgow’s turn as Winston Churchill. Viewers should expect a shift in the series' upcoming third season, following the announcement that Olivia Colman will move into the leading role of Queen Elizabeth II, previously played by Claire Foy in the first two seasons. The new cast includes Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret (previously played by Vanessa Kirby) and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip (Matt Smith).

The Crown’s third season is expected to shed light into the lives of Queen Elizabeth II, her family and friends in the late 1960s and 1970s. Anderson’s recent casting as Margaret Thatcher indicates that the fourth season will follow through into the 1980s.
Margaret Thatcher is a pillar of the British Conservative party who made history as Britain’s first female prime minister, serving from 1979 to 1990. Her well-known nickname, "Iron Lady", has been described by Variety as a “demonstration of her toughness on the world stage in dealing with everything from foreign policy crisis to political battles with Britain’s labor unions and other institutions”.
