eart-rending drama 27 Steps of May will be released in cinemas across Indonesia on April 27, according to a statement received by The Jakarta Post.
Directed by Ravi Bharwani, the film explores the struggles people face when dealing with trauma. In the movie May (Raihaanun) is raped when only 14 years old. Following the incident May becomes mute, while her father (Lukman Sardi) constantly blames himself for failing to protect May.
27 Steps of May premiered in the 2018 Busan International Film Festival and has been screened in various international film festivals, including the Cape Town International Film Market & Festival, Goteborg Film Festival and Bengaluru International Film Festival.

“May’s story is universal. It can happen to anyone and everyone can be a victim of sexual assault,” said the film’s writer and producer Rayya Makarim.
“We’re lucky to release the film for the Indonesian audience at the right time – while sexual violence issues [are frequently being discussed]. We will release it during the 2019 Women’s March Jakarta, which also addresses [the topic],” said Rayya. (jes/mut)
