Indonesian music history on display at Surabaya exhibition

More than 150 items are on display at the House of Sampoerna in Surabaya, East Java, to members of the public who are seeking to explore the country's music history.

elebrating National Music Day, which falls on March 9, the House of Sampoerna in Surabaya, East Java, is hosting an exhibition entitled "Indonesia Plays Music" from March 20 to April 28.

Surabaya is home to prominent Indonesian musicians such as Dara Puspita, Panbers, Gombloh and jazz maestro Bubi Chen.

House of Sampoerna manager Rani Anggraini told The Jakarta Post during the exhibition opening that the event was the result of a collaborative effort between the museum and several parties, including the Surabaya city administration, the Indonesian Music Museum and the Mpu Tantular Museum.

More than 150 items are on display to members of the public who are seeking to explore the country's music history, starting with the discovery of Nekara, an ancient two-headed drum made of bronze through the development of music until today's digital and multimedia age.

"We're also cooperating with the Surabaya city administration to hold a thematic tour program, a Surabaya Shopping and Culinary Track called 'Surabaya Melody', with which visitors will be taken to the House of Sampoerna and WR Soepratman's grave and museum on March 31 and April 6," Rani said.

She added that the exhibition aims to broaden the public's knowledge of Indonesian music history, as well as increase people's appreciation of traditional musical instruments. (kes)
