P

rima Unggul Institute (YPU), an entrepreneurship-based homeschooling center and orphanage, has presented musical drama Dian – The Musical, Road to a Musical Film on Saturday at Ciputra Artpreneur in South Jakarta.

The performance aims to break the stigmas surrounding orphanages, which are often perceived as exploitative toward children and overly reliant on social aid.

Directed by Helena Sophy Nanlohy, the drama follows Dian, an orphan with a strong sense of optimism even after her orphanage was engulfed in a fire. Among her friends, Dian is known as the one to rely on when the outside world seems unfriendly. The performance features traditional Indonesian song and dance with a comical touch from the child actors.

“We hope Dian will show people that character and morality are keys to developing committed, resilient, honest and respectful children,” said Martin Mesarudi Gea, founder of YPU and producer of the musical.

Dian is also supported by Indonesian musicians, including Tompi, Lea Simanjuntak and Mario Ginanjar.

“This musical drama is full of excitement,” said singer Tompi. “I saw their training process and it will be a spectacular performance from the children.”

Singer Lea Simanjuntak said she was amazed by the children’s enthusiasm. “This drama presents the spirit of friendship and moving forward, which are really needed by Indonesia. I’m proud to be able to collaborate with them,” Lea said.

Established in February 2011 and located in East Jakarta, YPU provides an entrepreneurship curriculum in an education system that intends to build character, advance mind-sets and develop talents through a number of activities, including choir and musical drama. (wir/wng)
