Indonesian rapper toRa released his debut album titled Melankolia (Melancholy) on Tuesday.
Prior to releasing his debut album, toRa had released a single “Kalamalam” in May 2018. Melankolia is an extension of the single.
For the debut album, toRa, whose real name is Macan Wigit, dove into melancholy, aiming to showcase a different side of hip hop.
“I designed everything, including the logo, album cover and more. I wanted to say that hip hop is not that fierce,” said toRa during a press conference on Tuesday, saying that the music was also suitable for those feeling melancholic or looking for songs about daily lives, love and broken hearts.
“Don’t be afraid to look a bit vulnerable,” he added.

The album consists of seven songs, including "Collarbones" and Ani", and it includes a cohesive storyline. Featuring romance, the songs talk about women as well as relationship.
During the event, toRa said the album was produced after he won a competition named the Go Ahead Challenge last year.
Rapper LaZe, toRa’s mentor who is also one of the judges in the competition, said that toRa had undergone a transformation during the competition by making his music more easy listening.
He also mentioned that in the competition toRa needed to compete with other musicians who came from different genres, such as jazz, rock, pop and EDM.
Speaking about Melankolia, LaZe said, "[The album] was based on toRa's life."
Melankolia is now available on Spotify. (kes)
