The movie will hit Indonesian cinemas on Aug. 22.
ali: Beats of Paradise is a film that follows the journey of gamelan (traditional orchestra) maestro I Nyoman Wenten and his wife, dancer-choreographer Nanik Wenten.
Both have lived in the United States for about 40 years and actively preserve Indonesian culture through music and dance.
The film is directed by East Java-born Livi Zheng, who made a debut in Hollywood with Brush with Danger in 2015.
“[Bali: Beats of Paradise] is based on a true story,” Livi told The Jakarta Post on July 18 in South Jakarta. She explained that Wenten taught in the Ethnomusicology Department at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts, while Nanik had collaborated with Ricky Martin.
Livi added, “So, it’s about their love story, struggle. But at the same time, [it] also features Indonesian culture and music.”
