Tenun ikat has found its place in the sun. Having always been known as a material for formal and traditional attire, the woven fabric has now been transformed into modern and light beachwear.
Fans of tenun ikat (traditional woven fabric) now have something new to pack in their suitcases when going on summer vacation.
IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana has transformed ikat into a light and comfortable fabric that provides beachgoers with an alternative sartorial option when heading to the beach.
“We provide the ikat artisans cotton-based materials to weave modern looks and light fabrics for the collection,” said creative director Didiet Maulana on the sidelines of the launch of the boutique's latest collection, Binar (Shine), at the Goods Dept. fashion store in Pacific Place, SCBD, Central Jakarta, last week.
Beyond woven fabric, the collection also introduced print fabric for some items such as organza tops and shawls and eye-catching ombre (color gradiation) motifs.
“We use print fabric to illustrate the transparent effect we cannot achieve by using woven fabric. But woven fabric still dominates the collection,” said Didiet.
There are more than 50 variants in the ready-to-wear Binar line, which has been available at online stores since June.
The launch at the fashion store saw IKAT Indonesia influencers, including singers Vidi Aldiano and Vira Talisa and TV personalities and personal friends, show up with their favorite pieces from the collection.
