café is no longer seen as merely a place to eat and drink, as it has become more common nowadays for people to work, conduct business meetings or exchange ideas in an informal situation in a café.
Aware of how a café can become a place for the brightest ideas to generate, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) launched Botani Bakery earlier in September at its Dramaga campus, one of the university’s four campuses.
Botani Bakery, opened by IPB rector Arif Satria on Wednesday, Sept. 11, is a business under IPB’s directorate of business and entrepreneurship development, in collaboration with the South East Asian Food and Agricultural Science and Technology (Seafast) Center.
With its scientific background, Botani Bakery is capable of such innovations as producing its own non-wheat bread. As the bakery carries the concept of food diversification, the types of flour used to make bread are made from cassava, corn and other local ingredients.
IPB rector Arif Satria said the new café did not only aim to make a profit, but it also had a vision.
“The vision is food independence and food diversification. All IPB […] innovations […] aim for that,” said Arif, adding that the benefits of innovations are to be useful for the public, including other food products from IPB, as well as drinks that are part of the university’s mission to encourage a green lifestyle.

IPB vice rector for business and entrepreneurship Erika Budiati said bread produced by Botani Bakery was not yet 100 percent wheat flour-free. However, they will gradually become fully wheat flour-free with the innovation developed at the Seafast center.
Botani Bakery operates from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.
There are three other cafes in the IPB compound namely Café Taman Koleksi (Ta-Kol Greenery Resto) at the university’s Baranangsiang campus, Kopisentrum Botani cafe and Kam-In restaurant also at Baranangsiang campus. Moreover, a number of canteens also operate across the university. (mut)
