Luna Maya is said to present a different side of Suzzanna in her latest horror film, Suzzanna: Santet Ilmu Pelebur Nyawa.
una Maya is to reprise her role as the late Indonesian horror queen Suzzanna in her latest film, Suzzanna: Santet Ilmu Pelebur Nyawa (Suzzanna: Black Magic Annihilates the Soul).
Produced by Soraya Intercine Film and helmed by Ricky Soraya, the film is to hit cinemas this year.
During a press conference on Thursday in Jakarta, Luna said she’s in the process of preparing for her role and wanted to present a new side of the horror queen.
The 36-year-old actress said she would soon fly to Russia and spend several days discussing makeup effects for the role.
“I’ll be going through various processes ranging from prosthetics and makeup to hair [styling],” Luna told kompas.com.
In 2018, Luna had also traveled to Russia to discuss her makeup effects for the first film, Suzzanna: Bernapas dalam Kubur (Suzzanna: Buried Alive) that was released in the same year.
Luna added that her character design would be different than the one in Suzzanna: Bernapas dalam Kubur. “The first film was about a sundel bolong [female spirit with a hole in her back], while this one is about santet, so it’ll be different,” she said.
Filming is to begin in mid-2020 and Luna said she planned to watch more films that featured Suzzanna. “I’ll also be researching more about santet,” said Luna. “If I could, I hope I’d be able to meet with santet shaman to observe the process.”
In Suzzanna: Bernapas dalam Kubur, Luna’s appearance bore a resemblance to the late Suzzanna Martha Frederika van Osch. The film itself followed the story of Suzzanna (Luna Maya), a pregnant woman who was murdered. Her spirit later seeks revenge on the people who killed her.
In the box office, the film attracted more than 3.3 million moviegoers and was ranked second in the top 15 most-viewed local films in 2018, according to Indonesian movie database website Filmindonesia.or.id. (wir/kes)
