"The past 18 months brought an incredible shift in how we used our PCs," said Panos Panay, Microsoft's chief product officer, in a blog post Thursday announcing the forthcoming operating system. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, "we went from fitting the PC into our lives to trying to fit our whole lives into the PC," he said.
To accommodate a dramatic increase in telework, Windows 11 will integrate Microsoft Teams into the system's taskbar with chat and videoconferencing functions.
It also aims to enable cross-platform connections with users of Apple's iOS or Google's Android operating systems.
For the first time, Android apps will be made available in Windows through a redesigned Microsoft Store.
Microsoft still dominates the market for operating systems in personal computers. The current Windows 10, released in 2015, is used in more than 1.3 billion computers around the world.
