South Jakarta Police questioned eight witnesses on Friday in the murder of high school student Winston Reynaldi and his sister-in-law Lidwina Ivy.
Winston, 17, and Lidwina, 32, were murdered on Thursday in a luxurious two-story house owned by Winston's parents in the elite Pondok Pinang residential complex in South Jakarta.
Comr. Iwan Kurniawan of the South Jakarta Police said five of the witnesses worked at the house.
"We questioned three maids, a babysitter and a driver. The three other witnesses are traveling food vendors who happened to be in the vicinity when the victims were found dead," he told The Jakarta Post.
"We are still conducting investigations and trying to establish motives," he said, rejecting the possibility the murders were masterminded by other family members.
Winston, a junior at Pangudi Luhur High School, was the son of businessman Mursheto, while Lidwina had married Mursheto's older son two months ago.
A maid found the victims on Thursday afternoon on the second floor of the house. Winston's body was in the bathroom and Lidwina's in the bedroom.
The maid screamed and ran outside to tell fellow workers and vendors about the two bodies in the house.
They then informed the neighborhood chief, who reported the incident to police.
The bodies were later taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta for an autopsy.
Iwan said the results of the autopsy indicated Lidwina had been asphyxiated, while Winston had been stabbed in the chest.
"Winston was stabbed with a thin sharp object, much like a screwdriver, in the left part of his chest," Iwan said.
"Lidwina's hands and feet were bound with ropes, and her mouth was gagged so she couldn't breathe and eventually died.
"When we found them, the victims were fully clothed. The autopsy revealed no indication of sexual abuse."
He added police were still investigating items discovered at the scene.
"We found a piece of wood, which we believe was used to knock the victims out, as well as fingerprints," he said.
He said the South Jakarta Police had teamed up with the City Police to investigate the case.
"The City Police have provided us with a backup team. It's common practice for them to assist us in certain cases," Iwan said.
"Hopefully, with this additional team, we can solve the murders quickly and bring the perpetrators to justice."
