JAKARTA: Indonesia's soccer great Iswadi Idris died of a stroke at Metropolitan Medical Center Hospital in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Friday. He was 60 years old.
The all-round footballer, better known as si boncel (the short) for his compact size, was the best player in the Marahalim Cup in 1973. He played for local clubs, including MBFA, IM of Jakarta, Pardedetex, Jayakarta and Persija of Jakarta. He also played for the Western Suburbs club in Australia.
As well as the national team, he led Indonesia to victory in the Merdeka Games in Malaysia in 1969. --JP
