Graduation show FEATURES FUTURISTIC STYLES

A

s colorful neon lamps twinkled like disco lights, models dressed in shocking colors and holding umbrellas and teddy bears began to "conquer" the runway, posing like young girls in a playground.

Denim hot pants and miniskirts with candy-colored stockings created the nuances of "bubble-pop electric".

Shocking colors pretty much dominated the fashion show, "Electromagnifi que", organize by LaSalle College International Jakarta, on Tuesday.

The event was a graduation show showcasing around 270 outfits from 96 students at the school. The show featured several sequences, including "bubble-pop electric", "amazonian rhapsody", "street sirens", "culture vultures", "age of innocence", "belles of opera" and "lost theater".

LaSalle came up with the themes for this year's show, with electronic having become the hottest trend of late, said Diaz, the show's creative director.

"We tried to present a show which covered many aspects: young, energetic and abstract. We combined many modern infl uences including music, film and our surroundings," he said.

Many students created outfi ts with asymmetric cuttings, creating futuristic touches. The combination of three colors - black, grey and silver, which are said to represent a futuristic style, also appeared in several collections.

Some students seemed bravely different in creating unique designs. An asymmetric brown-black coat, for instance, was matched with big belt, a see-through long black dress, boots and a fencing helmet. Others designed outfits by recycling used paper, wire, black umbrellas and tires, combining them with colors like silver and black. These were defi nitely not the kinds of clothes you would wear in daily life. While electronic and futuristic designs dominated the show, basic women's and men's was still the students' favorites.

The graduation event was not just a fashion show for fashion design students, but was also a display of other students' projects from the college. Fashion business students displayed their enterprise projects, while students studying computer and multimedia courses presented short movies, video clips and motion graphics. Meanwhile, photography students also displayed their photographs in an exhibition and students majoring interior design featured their interior installations.

Poppy Dharsono, a senior fashion designer, said every graduate should have their own identity that differentiates their collections from those of other designers.

"Fashion is not just about lines, cutting and colors. You need to be able to run your business to develop your creations," she said.

"So, it is important to have management, fi nancial and merchandising skills, as well as good networking skills," said Poppy, who is also a stakeholder in LaSalle.
