URABAYA: The East Java provincial administration and state-owned forest management company Perum Perhutani has agreed to jointly develop the province's forests in a bid to help improve the economy and protect the environment.
Speaking after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the cooperation agreement, Friday, Governor Soekarwo said Perum Perhutani's role in preserving the forests in the province was significant.
"Around 28 percent of the province's 4.7 million hectares of forests are under the management of the company," he said.
He expressed hope that in helping improve the production of the people's forests the company would not just lend a hand in the production process but also in the marketing of them.
Deputy head of East Java's Perum Perhutani Unit II, Eddy Djanad, expressed hope that the cooperation would help reduce the critical and infertile areas in the province that had currently reached 3.7 million hectares.- JP
