AKASSAR: A fire destroyed at least 32 houses in Panampu subdistrict, Tallo district, Makassar on Monday night, leaving 325 people homeless and causing an estimated Rp 900 million (US$90,000) in losses.

Witnesses said the fire occurred at about 10:30 p.m. local time and originated from a house rented by a resident named La Muri.

"The fire started on the second floor of Muri's house and is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit," Naidah, the owner of one of the houses, said.

Most of the residents did not able not salvage their belongings as the fire broke out while they were sleeping. "I have lost all my belongings, including Rp 6 million in cash," Arsyad, a resident, said.
