refer to a letter titled "Noise pollution in Jakarta" (The Jakarta Post, Feb. 1). Our hearing is already impaired early in the morning, by constantly being on cell phones as a consequence of the delay brought about by the dizzying, long traffic jams, while being bombarded by cars honking constantly and the never-ending sound of the engine, releasing toxic fumes in the air for others to breath.
Some people are simply ignorant, they blast their noisy horns right in front of you, because they are impatient or simply have no respect or as a means to remind you to clear off the road otherwise they will blast you off the road with their horns.
Over the weekend in places around Cipanas, West Java, people love to assemble in crowded places blasted by the sound of speakers. The salesmen at music stores love to have the sound system on full blast, loud enough to prove that by buying it there would be enough power to blast the whole neighborhood awake.
Even in a small gathering, a loudspeaker has to be used, simply for the love of noise perhaps. Look at the electronics stores, you will find public speakers hanging by the dozen in different sizes, to create future noise. If one is bombarded with continuous noise long enough, the brain will eventually cancel out the excess noise.
