ifteen-year-old swimmer Fibriani Ratna Marita secured a ticket to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore after a third-place finish in the pool at the ongoing Singapore National Age Group Championships, a key qualifier for the Games.

Fibriani became the second Indonesian youth athlete to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games, scheduled for Aug. 14-26, joining weightlifter Sumariyanto, who finished third in the men’s 56-kilogram class at the Youth World Championships in Chiangmai, Thailand, last May.

Fibriani finished third with a time of 2:23.98 in the finals of girls’ 200-meter individual medley on Thursday, three seconds faster than the qualifying limit of 2:26.97. She trailed behind Japanese swimmers Shichiri Natsumi, who finished first with 2:20.67, and Iwasaki Yukari, who came in at 2:20.96.

Indonesia’s Ressa Kania Dewi and Yessy V. Yosaputra also made it into the finals, but failed to make the qualifying time.

“The competition’s tough, especially with swimmers from Thailand and Japan,” national swimming coach and team manager Hartadi Nurtjojo told The Jakarta Post.

“But we’re not too worried as they only need to swim their best times, which are faster than the qualifying time.”

At last year’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Laos, Fibriani clocked in at 2:21.00, her personal best.
Yessy recorded a 2:21.43 in the girls’ 200-meter backstroke at the Asian Amateur Swimming Federation (AASF) Championships in Japan last year, three seconds under the 2:24.25 qualifying time.

Afi Nofiandari put in a time of 1:14.37 in the girls’ 100-meter breaststroke at the recent SEA Games, while Patricia Yosita timed 00:59.25 in the girls’ 100-meter freestyle at the Indonesian Interclub Swimming Championships (KRAPSI) last year.

Both swimmers came in a second faster than the qualifying limits.

Fibriani and the rest of the Indonesian team, which include Ressa, Yessy, Afi, Patrisia and Pratama Siahaan, will each participate in several events.

Besides the 200-meter individual medley, Fibriani will also take part in the 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter backstroke, while Yessy does the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke and Ressa competes in the 400-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly.

Due to a late registration, Indonesian youth swimmer Tiffani Sudarma, based in the United States, will not take part in the Speedo Champions Series South Sectional in Fort Lauderdale, which also serves as a qualifier for the Youth Olympics.

At the recent SEA Games, Tiffani clocked in two seconds faster than the Youth Olympics’ qualifying time in the girls’ 100-meter backstroke.
