T Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), a publicly listed subsidiary of the state-owned oil and gas firm, broke ground on a green hydrogen project in Ulubelu, Lampung, on Tuesday to leverage its renewable resources for low-carbon fuel production.

The pilot project is designed to produce up to 100 kilograms of green hydrogen per day, with an efficiency rate of 82 to 88 percent. The company aims to begin operations next year, with a total investment of US$3 million.

The facility is claimed to be the first to integrate Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolyzer technology with geothermal energy as a clean electricity source.

As a fuel that does not produce carbon emissions during production or use, green hydrogen is considered crucial for reducing emissions in industries that are difficult to electrify, such as steel, cement and transportation.

PGE president director Julfi Hadi said the facility marks a critical step in positioning Indonesia within the global clean energy supply chain.

“We are combining geothermal energy with modern electrolysis to produce efficient and sustainable green hydrogen,” he said in a statement issued on Tuesday, noting Ulubelu’s potential to become a replicable innovation hub for other geothermal areas.

Julfi added that PGE’s strategy includes using green hydrogen as feedstock for derivatives such as green ammonia and methanol, positioning them as essential fuels and raw materials for a future low-carbon industry.
