BALI: Eight Balinese teenagers were selected as healthy eating and living ambassadors in a contest organized by two Belgian NGOs.

Along with four other teenage ambassadors from Solo and Boyolali, they will be sent to Belgium in October to participate in a joint program on sustainable agriculture with Belgium teenagers.

The teenagers are Made Ayu Pradnyawati, Zetira, Luh Putu Estalita, Putu Norma Astyari, Bunga Amalia, Desak Putri, Luluk Anisa and Katharina Esther.

The contest was organized by Vredeseilanden Country Office (VECO) Indonesia, an NGO
promoting sustainable agriculture, and the South Day Foundation/ZUIDDAG.

“Four ambassadors from Solo and Boyolali will be selected on Tuesday,” Mercya Soesanto of VECO Indonesia said.

The final stage of the contest, which took place Saturday, saw 16 nominees answer questions related to healthy eating, local cuisine and traditional agriculture before a panel of judges.

Responding to a question on fast food, Luh Putu Estalita said the growth of fast food culture among the country’s youth was not being accompanied by sufficient knowledge about health risks associated with processed foods.

“Fast food is delicious and I consume it occasionally. Yet we often forget about the health risks associated with the food,” she said. — JP
