AKARTA: A member of the presidential special staff for social aid and natural disaster suggests Jakarta administration create a seismic microzonation map of the city, following a 5.8 Richter-scale earthquake that hit Jakarta early Thursday.
“The 2010 seismic hazard map compiled by nine Indonesian seismologists shows Jakarta is experiencing an increase of base rock acceleration just like other regions such as Surabaya in East Java, Yogyakarta and Semarang in Central Java.
“If the regional administrations are willing to conduct research on earthquake microzonation then the possibility of the disaster
in every regions will be better mapped,” the presidential special staff, Andi Arif, said in a press release Thursday.
“The map must be supported by an emergency plan therefore Jakarta and Surabaya must have facilities and vital buildings available in the case of an emergency actions.” — JP
