EDAN: Blue Bird taxis began operating in Medan on Monday, in defiance of protests of a rival fleet.

The taxi management said the first phase of the launch involved a total of 100 cabs in Medan and its surrounds, with plans to soon increase the fleet to 500.

“We expect all 500 cabs to be in operation by next year,” Blue Bird operational manager Sarwanto said Sunday.

The company chose Medan as the first city in Sumatra to provide Blue Bird taxi services, but has plans to soon expand to other parts of the island.

Blue Bird currently has operations in Cilegon, Bandung, Surabaya, Bali, Lombok, Manado and Jakarta.

Dozens of drivers from rival taxi companies opposed Blue Bird’s plan to operate in Medan, before agreeing on the condition that Blue Birds would not be permitted at Polonia Airport; not take drivers from other operators; and not camp at premises already served by other operators. — JP
