ate starter men’s doubles pair Alvent Yulianto Chandra and Hendra Aprida Gunawan bounced back from a game down to overcome their Indian opponents at the opening match of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships at the Wembley Arena in London on Tuesday.

Eighth seeded in the tournament, duo Alvent and Hendra were stunned by the unseeded Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas of India in the first game. The Indian pair snatched a 7-3 lead. Although Alvent and Hendra managed to tie 13-13, the Indians sealed the first game 23-21.

The shocking first-game loss drove the Indonesians to rocket a quick-and-merciless revenge in the second game. Alvent and Hendra surged from the first point to fashionably wrap up the second game 21-11.

The highly experienced world number 8 Indonesians gave no chance for the world No. 34 Indians to recover from their loss, by leading as far as 11-5 and booking their second round ticket in 21-12.

Hendra and his former world number one pair Alvent will likely face 16 seed Mads Conrad-Petersen and Jonas Rasmussen. The Danish pair met Mattijs Dierickx and Dorian Lance James of Germany in their late Tuesday opener.

Other Indonesian doubles competing late Tuesday are women’s doubles Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii, who played Neslihan Kilic and Neslihan Yigit of Turkey.

Women’s doubles young guns Della Destiara Haris and Suci Rizky Andini also dueled against third seed Japanese Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna. Della and Suci are the champions of the recent Indonesia International Challenge, while Suci was crowned Asia Junior champion title at last month’s Asia Junior U-19 championships with her pair at the time, Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah.

In the mixed doubles sector, M. Rijal and Debby Susanto faced Mads Pieler Kolding and Julie Humann of Denmark, and Fran Kurniawan Teng and Pia Zebadiah Bernadet against Fang Chieh Min and Wang Pei Rong of Taiwan.

In the late Tuesday’s singles matches, men’s singles Simon Santoso played Pedro Martins of Portugal, while women’s singles Lindaweni Fanetri met Juliane Schenk of Germany.

Just like top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia who already passed his first hurdle on Monday, second seed Chinese top men’s singles shuttler Lin Dan also had a smooth ride to the next round to play Scott Evans of Ireland.

Lin Dan eased into the second round of the world championships with a 21-11 21-10 success over Lithuanian Kestutis Navickas on Tuesday.

The victory avoided fresh Chinese embarrassment after the shock defeat on Monday of fifth-seed Chen Long by Guatemalan outsider Kevin Cordon.

“Conditions in the hall are good and the drift and light are favorable for me. I feel comfortable here,” said Lin as quoted by Reuters news agency on Tuesday.

“I concentrated well and played well.”

Wang Shixian, China’s top seed in the women’s singles, started her campaign with a comfortable 21-11 21-14 victory over Bulgaria’s Linda Zechiri.

There was more success for Ireland when Scott Evans beat Austria’s Michael Lahnsteiner 21-15 21-16 in the men’s singles, following Chloe Magee’s opening day win in the women’s event.
