View all search resultsData from the Network for Education Watch Indonesia (JPPI) shows a rising trend in reports of bullying in educational institutions over recent years.
junior high school student in Blitar, East Java, was assaulted by his seniors during his school orientation, marking the latest in a series of bullying incidents that underscore the persistent problem of violence in the country's educational institutions despite government efforts to curb it.
Blitar Police reported that the 12-year-old student, identified only by the initials WV, was allegedly assaulted by 20 fellow students on July 18, just days after he began attending SMP 3 Doko state junior high school.
“The victim was reportedly summoned by a senior student to an area near the school bathroom. Once there, he was surrounded by 20 students who allegedly hurled verbal abuse at him,” Blitar Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Arif Fazlurrahman said recently, as quoted by Antaranews.
Arif added that the incident was allegedly sparked by claims that WV had mocked other students, prompting the group to confront him in retaliation and "teach him a lesson."
One of the alleged perpetrators, identified only by the initials NTN, then reportedly slapped WV on the cheek and kicked him in the stomach, triggering the others to join in the assault.

After the attack, several older students allegedly threatened WV, warning him not to report the incident to teachers or his parents. Despite the threats, the student later informed his father about the assault.
