T Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR), the upstream subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina, will begin chemical injection in December under the Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) scheme at Minas Field, Rokan Block, Riau.

If successful, the plan would mark the first commercial-scale implementation of CEOR technology in Indonesia.

This technique is used to extract additional oil from mature reservoirs by injecting specific chemicals, such as polymers, surfactants or alkalis, to alter the properties of the oil and improve its flow toward production wells.

Eviyanti Rofraida, corporate secretary of PHR Regional 1 Sumatra, said the initiative follows the recent approval of the Final Investment Decision (FID), allowing the project to move into its execution phase.

“The Minas Field is the first in Indonesia to implement CEOR commercially,” she said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, as reported by CNBC Indonesia.

Agus Masduki, PHR’s senior petroleum engineer for the CEOR project, said the initial phase could increase output by 2,800 barrels per day (bpd). With further scaling, production could rise to between 30,000 and 50,000 bpd by 2028.
