ALI: Developed countries have granted US$12 million to Indonesia to help it reduce the use of substances that would deplete the ozone layer, over the next seven years, a senior official says.
The Environment Ministry’s deputy assistant for climate change mitigation and ozone layers protection, Sulistyowati, said that the country had previously received similar grants of $61 million for its participation in shifting the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) to hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC).
The government has planned to gradually halt the consumption of HCFC, a substance that depletes the ozone layer, by reducing HCFC consumption by 10 percent by 2015. “The public still need more information to raise their awareness about the ozone layer,” said Sulistyowati as quoted by kompas.com.
The country ratified the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987 and has since issued regulations on the control of ozone layer depleting substances.
