ndonesian women’s double Anneke Feinya Agustin-Nitya Krishinda Maheswari advanced to the semifinals of the Korea Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament after crashing host players A Reum-choi-Hyun Young-yoo 21-16, 21-16 on Friday.
Except Anneke and Nitya, all other Indonesian players failed to advance to the semifinals.
Anneke-Nitya, non-seeded in the tournament, will face fourth seeded Shinta Mulia Sari-Lei Yao of Singapore in the semis. The Singaporeans earned the semis spot after beating Chinese Luo Ying-Luo Yu 21-18,
22-20.
Since the beginning of the match, the Indonesian pair managed to control the game, leading 11-4 against the host pair who was known over their powerful attack.
“We’re really glad to win. At least Indonesia will be represented in the semifinals,” Nitya said after the match as quoted by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) website, www.pb-pbsi.org.
The South Korean pair was quite offensive but we were much ready. Our ability to cover the court was also better,” she added.
Mixed doubles Fran Kurniawan-Shendy Puspa Irawati, seeded eight in the tournament, were defeated
by non-seeded Baek Choel-shin-Ha Na-kim of South Korea 21-17, 21-15. The host pair will match against compatriots Ki Jung-kim-Kyung Eun-jung, seventh seeded here, who beat Chinese Tao Jiaming-Huan Xia 21-17, 22-20 in the Friday’s quarterfinals.
Another Indonesian pair in the category, Fadhilah Irfan-Anggraini Weni was also halted 21-5, 21-17 by South Korean Yeon Seong-yoo-Ye Na-jang. The host pair claimed the quarterfinals spot and is set to face compatriots and fifth seeded Sung Hyun-ko-Hye Won-eom, who upset fourth seeded Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Yu Yan Vanessa Neo of Singapore 15-21, 21-17, 21-14.
Indonesian hopeful Tommy Sugiarto, fifth seeded here, in the men’s singles also failed to continue through the next round after being beaten 21-13, 21-14 by third seeded Hyun Il-lee of South Korea. The world No. 11 Lee will match against world No. 5 Jin Chen, who earned his semifinals spot by outclassing 15th seeded Wei Feng Chong of Malaysia 13-21, 21-14, 21-10.
Men’s double pair Ricky Karanda Suwardi-Muhammad Ulinnuha was also failed to advance to semis after bow out to second seeded Sung Hyun-ko-Yeon Seong-yoo of South Korea 21-16, 21-18.
In another court, South Korean Wan Ho-shon, sixth seeded here, will match up against 13th seeded Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif of Malaysia in the quarterfinals. Wan managed to advance after winning easily over walkover compatriot Ji Hoon-hong, while Latif beat compatriot Daren Liew 21-18, 19-21, 21-13 in the quarterfinals.
In the women’s single, fifth seeded Xuerui Li of China – who upset first seeded Yanjiao Jiang of China 21-19, 11-8 (retired) – will up against fellow Li Han – who ousted South Korean Hyun Jin-lee 23-21, 21-13 – in the quarterfinals.
Fourth seeded Xin Liu of China will face second seeded Ji Hyun-sung of South Korea in the semis. Xin beat Japanese Miki Takagi 21-10, 21-18, while Ji advanced to semis as compatriot Hye Youn-hwang walked over in the quarterfinals.
