I don’t even know who turned on the TV to watch the match. I never intended to profit from it or commercialize the screening,” Endang said on Wednesday.
ndonesian streaming service Vidio.com has filed a police report against a 78-year-old woman from Klaten, Central Java, accusing her of illegally broadcasting an English Premier League (EPL) soccer match at her café without a proper license.
The woman, Endang Wahyu Hidayati, said the match was aired during a family gathering at her café on May 11, 2024, and denied any commercial intent behind the screening.
“At the time, I was holding an Idul Fitri family gathering at the café. I didn’t close the place, so there were also customers present. I don’t even know who turned on the TV to watch the match. I never intended to profit from it or commercialize the screening,” Endang said on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
She said she received a formal legal warning from Vidio.com in June of last year and was eventually reported to the Central Java Police for allegedly violating Article 118 of the 2014 Copyright Law, which pertains to copyright infringement. This violation carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison and a fine of up to Rp 1 billion (US$60,715).
Endang’s daughter-in-law, Dewi, who manages the café, also denied that the establishment had organized a paid public viewing of the English Premier League match.
“We never sold tickets, and we never held any kind of public viewing event,” she said. “We just hope for some leniency, a fair policy and a win-win solution.”
Endang said that on Monday the Central Java Police organized a mediation session between her and Vidio.com but no agreement was reached between them.
