Rano quits Tangerang post

T

angerang deputy regent Rano Karno has resigned from his current post following his victory as the running mate of Ratu Atut Chosiyah in the recent Banten gubernatorial election.

“The incumbent deputy regent has filed a request to leave the post,” Hermansyah, Tangerang regency administration secretary, told reporters on Wednesday.

“The response to the letter would be made official in a special plenary session to be held by the regency’s legislative council in the near future.”

Rano, former prominent actor and movie producer, ran for the regental election in 2008 with Ismet Iskandar, the incumbent regent at that time. Their tenure lasts until 2013.

According to Hermansyah, Tange-rang Regent Ismet would not look for a replacement for Rano.

“The regent will resume leadership without a deputy during the administration’s tenure,” Hermansyah said.

Through its final plenary session held on Oct. 30, the Banten General Elections Commission (KPU) announced that the Atut and Rano ticket had won the Banten gubernatorial election by securing 49.64 percent of the ballot.

KPU chairman Hambali told The Jakarta Post that the elected governor and deputy governor for the 2012–2017 term would be sworn in on Jan. 11.

Rano is believed to have played a pivotal role in Atut’s apparent victory, alongside the machinery of a coalition of political parties that backed their nomination.
